One year after Ekspedisi Sungai Jogja 2011, we thought it would be great to compare Code River with the other rivers in Yogyakarta. Code River is one of the three main river that runs through the Yogyakarta city, with Winanga and Gajahwong located on the west and east respectively from where Code is. Our friend Zaeni from Cantigi Indonesia posted some gorgeous photos taken from the upstream part of Winanga River. The photos were tempting us to do another visit and so we choose Winanga River as our next destination.

Ekspedisi Sungai Jogja in 2011, the beginning of Jogja River Project

Jogja River Project was started from a simple idea of us (lifepatch) to get to ‘know’ and have a ‘closer look’ of our own rivers in Yogyakarta. As citizens who lives in an urban areas, most of us probably have seen the rivers thousands of times, from a bridge.  Many times we heard about it on the news, watched it on television, reading it on the internet whenever there’s something happening on the river. But we never really did actually went there, take a walk beside it, watching the riverbank areas with our own eyes. I personally, have only been to the river once when I conducted a field test class for my university degree. That one time visit happened during my 16 years of stay as citizen in Yogyakarta.

nalareksa 0.4: riverize [installation]

Installed during residency period in Dislocate09 – Mediations of Locality, October – November 2009 in Tokyo, Japan.

During 40 days residency in Tokyo, nalareksa was displayed in a group exhibition alongside with the works from other Artists in Residency. The Artists are:

  2. Lim Kok Yoong (Malaysia)
  3. Preeyachanok Ketsuwan (Thailand)
  4. Andreas Siagian (Indonesia)

The exhibition was held in SGallery, Tokyo Kodaira-shi Takanodai 28-13 on 26th Ocober – 6th November 2009.

nalareksa 0.3: acidic-tive [installation]

INSTALLED ON: M.A.R.I.N. Ecolocated: Littoral Lives Exhibition for International Symposeum of Electronic Arts (ISEA) 2009, Belfast, UK.


“Nalareksa 0.3: Acidic-tive” installation was part of M.A.R.I.N. Ecolocated: Littoral Lives exhibition for ISEA2009. The instruments for the first time was used to analyze salt water sample taken from Belfast harbor where M.A.R.I.N catamaran was docked during its’ participation in ISEA2009. For the installation several sensors were developed on the instruments to create sounds effects from the main sound generator which is the physical impact of air and water.

The Dialogue on Art, Culture & Climate Change is an investigation into the role of culture and the arts in the cross-cultural dialogue on climate change between and in Asia and Europe. The Dialogue aims to raise the awareness on climate change and sustainability in cultural and arts communities in Asia and Europe and at investigating different perspectives on this subject. It also seeks to strengthen the role and the voice of culture and arts in the dialogue on and actions related to climate change. Furthermore, it aims to explore creative cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural connections between artists, scientists, and other climate change thinkers leading to joint approaches and collaborations for climate change actions.

Intro to Nalareksa

Nalareksa is a method of air analysis by using water as a mediator for the research. To investigate out the elements in air, we could use water as a mediator for the container of the elements from the air if we know the balance condition between air and water. Nalareksa was founded by Prof. Ir. Hardjoso Prodjopangarso as his intention for his research could be useful by small people in Indonesia.

In “old Javanese”, the word nala means beloved ones and the word reksa means nourishing. Literally, nalareksa represent the world as a beloved one that needs nourishing from humans. In this case, taking precautions to pollutants that may cause destruction to the world. Every equipments, sciences and technologies for Nalareksa were created by the simplest approach so it could be reached by common. That’s why all the instruments in Nalareksa are made using easy-to-find materials in Indonesia. As already known, people became realizes of climate changes as the result of the significant increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases (gas emission caused by fossil fuels usage for transportation) and deforestation in concentrations via enhanced greenhouse effects. CO2/CO in large concentrations are created reducing benefit elements such as O2/O3 concentration for humans. Continue reading

nalareksa project

Nalareksa is an art and science project that focus on sustainable creativity, research practical work, generic infrastructure, physical and chemical engineering in relations to hydro environmental issues. This project took the same name from a method of air analysis by using water as a mediator for the research innovated by Prof. Hardjoso Projopangarso, a Civil Engineer who intensively works in hydro-sustainability and construction in Indonesia. Nalareksa method is simply to get aerated water samples from sites to analyze air conditions of the locations. The water samples will then be analyzed for laboratory works using several chemical elements and formula to identify air conditions variables that will be used by Civil Engineers as a guidance to design air circulations and ventilation system.Nalareksa method became part of Environmental Engineering for Civil Engineer practical work, implemented in the national curriculum for Civil Engineer studies.
